Portraying a unique interpretation of the horses’ life has inspired me to create “Spirit
of the Seasons.” I wanted to depict the elements of nature that the horse endures on a daily basis, its keen
instinct to warn us of danger or a storm coming in, therefore, also considered a protector.
Being a Pueblo Native and potter, the designs that I chose to adorn the horse with are those that
symbolize the natural forces; the sun, moon, wind, rain, snow and fire. The step pattern on most pottery represent the clouds,
others consider this pattern as kiva steps or the mountains. As an artist, I am constantly inspired to add a unique twist
to the shapes and designs of my pottery, and yet keeping it simple and mindful of our culture. The spiral signifies (migration/movement)
the continuance of our journey, and it also depicts the wind and smoke. Rain drops and snow are characterized by vertical
lines, dots and circles. One large snowflake on the left hind leg exemplifies the horses characteristic of facing the same
direction of the falling rain, snow, wind and having its rear end against the storm. After the moisture of Winter, comes the
season of Spring, thus the symbol of a flower. The representation of designs on the shield symbolize elements of protection,
as like the horse. The Summer clouds and rain take us into the Fall, at which time we give gratitude for the harvest, and
the ways of our ancestors that were instilled in our hearts. As our Father Sun continuously gives us life he is placed on
top as a reminder of a higher power.
May your hearts and home always be greeted with the gentle spirit of the seasons.
